The Criminal Investigations Division encompasses all law enforcement and forensic components residing within the Department of Financial Services. With this broad responsibility, the division investigates a wide range of fraudulent and criminal acts including:

  • Insurance Fraud Investigations
  • Workers’ Compensation Fraud Investigations
  • Fire, Arson, and Explosives Investigations
  • Theft/Misuse of State Funds
  • Fire and Explosives Sample Analysis
  • Public Assistance Fraud

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or its' equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in a Law Enforcement Accredited agency. An Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university may substitute for the required experience.
  • Two (2) years of experience working with evidence.
  • Experience working with property and evidence procedures.
  • Must be able to travel.

Special consideration may be given to eligible candidates who have bilingual verbal & written skills that meet a critical need of the agency’s mission.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING REQUIRED ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of monitoring techniques.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

If applicable, (Incumbent of position is a member of DFS’ Disaster Response Team and, in that capacity, may be required on short notice to perform duties and necessary attendant travel in support of disaster relief efforts.)

 

Property and Evidence Coordination:

  • Responsible for ensuring the Division property and evidence facilities around the state are operated in a consistent, effective, and efficient manner, in compliance with state statutes, court orders, agency policies and procedures, retention guidelines, accreditation standards, and best practices.
  • Ensures facilities are equipped with Division policy and Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc (CFA) requirements and features – i.e., security features, shelves, bins, cold storage.
  • Periodically audits entries that are made into the records management system to ensure entries are timely and accurate and in accordance with Division policy and procedures.
  • Coordinates routine purging of property and evidence within all facilities with no further prosecutorial value.
  • Coordinates and/or conducts required audits, inventories, and inspections of all property and evidence facilities.
  • Completes required annual and/or time sensitive reports as required by accreditation standards.
  • Evaluates and analyzes the Division’s property and evidence function and identifies specific areas of improvement and/or opportunities for increased efficiency or effectiveness in policy and in agency practices.
  • Makes recommendations for improvements via the chain of command.
  • Provides support and assistance to Division evidence custodians.

 

Professional Development and Division Training:

  • Attends career development courses related to property and evidence.
  • Develops and trains new field office evidence custodians in their duties and responsibilities as custodians, including required accreditation standards.
  • Develops and conducts refresher training for all evidence custodians.

 

Compliance Reviews:

  • Assists the Division Inspector with ensuring compliance with applicable policy/procedures/standards as it relates to property and evidence.
  • Provides required reports and information; makes recommendations to the Division Inspector for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of Division's operations, policies, and procedures as it relates to property and evidence.
