HUMANITIES & PERFORMING ARTS (MUSIC OR DANCE) PART-TIME FACULTY HUMANITIES FACULTY, PART-TIME HAROLD WASHINGTON COLLEGE, HUMANITIES & MUSIC (& More) DEPARTMENT Harold Washington College seeks part-time Faculty members to teach one or more courses in an upcoming term. The ideal candidate will have a passion for teaching and learning, commitment to the college mission, and a record of demonstrated success in the classroom in supporting and cultivating student learning. We are seeking instructors for:

VARIOUS HUMANITIES-RELATED SUBJECTS

Cinema Studies (Film appreciation, film history, issues in documentaries). Art History and Appreciation. Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies (Humanities/Arts-related). Race, Ethnicity, and Cultural Studies (Various, Humanities/Arts-related). Philosophy (Logic, Intro, Ethics, Aesthetics, Social/Political). Interdisciplinary Courses (e.g., Literary & Visual Arts &/or Philosophy & Performing Arts).

MUSIC

Music Instruction (including Private Lessons in various instruments) Voice (Pop, Jazz, Musical Theater, Classical) Banjo and Guitar

DANCE

World (Various Emphases)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design courses to meet learning outcomes and promote students’ active participation in their own learning. Create an effective learning environment that fosters students’ intellectual curiosity and helps students to problem solve using discipline-specific thinking strategies. Employ a variety of formative and summative assessments to ensure that classroom instruction leads to student learning and the attainment of the student learning outcomes for the course. Help students reach their academic, personal and career goals and foster a safe environment that respects the diversity of people and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn. Contribute to and provide leadership in the student’s academic and professional communities and promote collaboration and teamwork among members of these communities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifying Academic Credentials: Credentialing for specific courses is determined by college policy. Generally, a Master's degree in the subject or a Master's plus 18 graduate credit hours in a related discipline allows an individual to teach within a specific academic area. Eligibility to teach is determined by transcripts, catalog course descriptions, and/or documentation from the granting institution that clarifies the content in the major is appropriate for the teaching assignment. In instances where an instructor’s academic preparation varies from the traditional credentials criteria, but the instructor possesses relevant qualifications or experience to the teaching assignment based on industry or specialized accreditation standards and contributes to effective teaching and student learning outcomes, a request for an exception may be approved by the Vice President via “Tested Experience.” Discipline specific credentials are currently stated in academic policy as follows: Fine Arts (Art History/Appreciation & Cinema) Courses: Master’s in Art History or M.A. in Cinema; Humanities & Interdisciplinary Courses: M.A. in Humanities or M.A. in Classics, M.A. in Comparative Religions, or M.A. in Foreign Language literature, or Master’s degree with 18 graduate credit hours in one or several related humanities disciplines. Vice Presidents may also consider the following related degrees to credential an individual for a content related course: Master’s in Art History, Film Studies, Foreign Languages, English Literature, Theater, Philosophy, Music, Musicology, Medieval Studies, Interdisciplinary Humanities, etc. Music: Master’s in Music or Jazz Studies or Voice. Demonstrated involvement as a practicing artist in the specific disciplines or specializations may be considered; Dance: BA/BFA in Dance or professional level experience with three years of teaching experience or genre specific dance certification with five years of teaching experience will also be considered. Demonstrated involvement as a practicing artist in the specific disciplines or specializations of the respective style of dance. M.A./M.F.A preferred. Knowledge of Brightspace and Zoom, preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with a diverse group of staff and students required. Experience with a diverse, multilingual student population is desired, as is a commitment to the open access mission of the community college.
